About
Brown Squash The Brown squash season begins practice
in mid-October and runs through the academic year to early March. Brown's
women's team will be entering its 34th year, 22nd year as
a varsity sport, and the men's team has been active as a varsity sport since 1989.
The teams play similar schedules against all of the Ivy League teams in
Division I, including Dartmouth, Princeton, Penn, Harvard and Yale and Cornell,
and also compete against other colleges and in tournaments during the season. Practice
sessions are held in the afternoon, and include court drilling, circuit
training, weight training, match play and running. Conditioning is an important
part of the squash program and team members are expected to be physically ready
by the first match in the late fall. The
rosters fluctuate between 14-17 players each year with nine playing in each
varsity match. Throughout the season, all players generally have an opportunity
to compete in the top nine. Brown
hosts its matches in the Kate Brodsky Squash Pavilion, the site of numerous
national and international tournaments, including the Rolex U.S. Open in 1994
and 1995. Located in the Pizzitola
Sports center, the facility houses five air conditioned, state-of-the-art
glass-backed international softball squash courts, complete with seating for
300 spectators. In addition, there are six brand new international courts in
the Smith Swim Center. The teams also use the 4,000 square foot weight training
facility, which is supervised by two strength and conditioning specialists. The
teams utilize the indoor track at the Olney Margolies Athletic Center, which is
adjacent to the Pizzitola Sports Center. All of these facilities combined give
the squash program the best possible support facilities for training,
conditioning and competition. |
