Columbus, OH - Sophomore Randy Alevi (Old Westbury, NY) won seven of her 14 matches in the women's sabre on the first day of the NCAA Championship on Thursday at Ohio State's French Field House. After the first four of seven rounds, Alevi sits in 11th place, which would give her a second straight Honorable Mention All-American finish if she can maintain her standing. With her seven wins, Brown sits in a four-way tie for 17th place. Alevi's best win of the day was a narrow 5-4 win over Eileen Hassett of Notre Dame, who is in sixth place after day one with a 10-4 record. Alevi won two other bouts by 5-4 scores, winning twice by 5-3 scores and twice by 5-1 scores. Her only 5-4 loss came against Alexis Baran of Penn. Alevi is currently tied with four fencers at seven wins, but her indicator (difference of touches scored and received) is -4, putting her behind 10th place Allie Sneider of Harvard, while her 51 touches scored give her an advantage over Danielle Kamis of Penn, whose indicator is also -4. She needs just three wins to match her win total from her freshman season at NCAAs. On Friday, Alevi will fence her final nine bouts of the event, including bouts against all three First Team All-Ivy fencers in her weapon - Emily and Jackie Jacobson of Columbia and Alexa Weingarden of Harvard - as well as current third-place fencer Karolina Budna of Wayne State. On Saturday and Sunday, sophomores Adam Pantel (Mendham, NJ) and Adam Yarnell (Harrison, NY) will compete. Alevi's Thursday Results (not chronological): |
