Hebron, CT - With the Region 1 regular season coming to its final stretch, the Brown equestrian team placed fifth at Wesleyan's Windcrest Farm on Saturday, finishing 12 points behind first-place Connecticut. The result shrinks the Bears' lead in Region 1 to just seven points with two shows remaining. The first-place team at the end of the regular season qualifies for the Zone 1 Championship, from which the top two of four teams advance to IHSA Nationals. After senior Whitney Keefe (Wellesley, MA) finished second in Open Fences, Brown point riders struggled. Freshman Dakota Gruener (Berkeley, CA), fresh off winning High Point Rider the previous weekend, placed sixth in Intermediate Fences, followed by a fourth in Novice Fences from senior Irmak Tasindi (Istanbul, Turkey). On the flat, Keefe placed third in Open, sophomore Emma Bogdonoff (New London, CT) placed sixth, and Tasindi placed third. Senior Stephanie Carmack (Pawcatuck, CT) pinned fifth in Walk Trot Canter before sophomore Kona Shen (Seattle, WA) righted the ship a bit with a blue ribbon in Walk Trot. If there was a silver lining to the show for Brown, it was that five Bears pointed out of their classes, qualifying for Regionals. In Novice Flat, Tasindi and junior Emma Clippinger (Cambridge, MA) pointed up, the latter with a blue ribbon. Three riders pointed up from Walk Trot Canter. Senior Rosie Bogan (Clinton, NY) did so with a second-place finish, senior Joyce Kwok (Hong Kong, China) did so by pinning fourth, and senior Lucia Corso (New Haven, CT) got a blue ribbon to take first in her class and point up. This makes 18 Brown riders who have qualified individually, three in both Fences and Flat. Rounding out the blue ribbons for non-point riders were sophomore Elizabeth Giliberti (Washington, DC) in Open Fences, seniors Amy Cameron (North Andover, MA) and Emily Cole (Clayton, MO) in Novice Fences, and sophomore Emily Bourdeau (Longmeadow, MA) and senior Stephanie Syc (Lake Forest, IL) in Novice Flat. Next weekend's show will be held on Saturday at Mystic Valley Hunt Club in Gales Ferry, Conn., hosted by Connecticut College. The final show of the regular season will then take place two weeks later at Johnson & Wales' Equestrian Center in Rehoboth, Mass.
